Bristol based General Midi is one of the key acts on the famous British TCR label run by Rennie Pilgrem. 'Genetically Modified' is Crossman and Watson's (together General Midi) compilation for the Florida based Street Beats label. Luckily their chosen tracks are never obvious. That means enjoying the progressive breaks of PMT's 'Gyromancer', deep distorted baselines, psychedelic samples and edgy breaks in Chris Carter's 'Moonshot' (definitely a great track) and a strange but fascinating BuckFunk 3000 remix of industrial 2nd Gen's 'And/Or'. The diversity in material makes 'Genetically Modified' not a very easy album to listen to. Take for instance the rather direct breaks by Proper Filthy Nasty next to the atmospheric '777' by Aquasky that nearly sounds like old rave. But that diversity is definitely the charm of this compilation. Together with the General Midi material carefully mixed in between. Just listen to the hectic lightly psychedelic 'Future' and 'Daft Punk' and you'll understand.
