This Dutch band started in the early nineties as a goth rock/postpunk outfit. They released two demo tapes before signing to the German Dion Fortune Records (also Garden of Delight and Catastrophe Ballet) on which they released the 'Rearm' EP and 'A Body And Birthmark' (1994). After these releases the band was looking for a change in sound which resulted in the somewhat industrial-gothic track 'Take Us, We Are Glass', that was featured on the fourth Dion Fortune Sampler. Götterdämmerung left Dion Fortune Records and released another EP in 1996 'Purge' on the A Cellar Creates. It was not until recently (the end of 2001) that a new album, 'Morphia', was released on The Nature of Gothic label. From the opening track 'Ten Grim Commandments' up until the last song 'Disembodiment' this album is filled with old-school goth rock and post- punk, just like the band made at the beginning of their career. While some might say that the production on this record lacks quality, I would argue that this suits the sound and atmosphere of this album just fine. If this record was released in the mid-eighties it would have been just another goth rock album but in today's by electronics dominated scene this band stands apart. Imagine a mixture of The Sisters of Mercy, Christian Death (old style with Rozz Williams) and Alien Sex Fiend. My favourite songs are 'Life As Art', which with its mix of electronics and guitars makes me think of Alien Sex Fiend, and 'Good Things', an excellent cover of a rare Sisters song. What isn't that good about this album is that the intros on certain tracks are much too long. Besides that there is the fact that some guitar parts sound a bit too familiar to me (the intro to 'Echoes of Despair' which seems to me to be taken directly from 'Alice' by the Sisters). Besides this I can only say that this is an excellent album. Everyone who likes that typical 80's goth rock sound should get a copy of this one. I sure hope this band starts playing live again soon and that the old times may revive?
