Number seven already in the FSOJ series, and with the already unbelievable levels of quality from Michael Reinboth's Compost in this millennial year this compilation will only further re-enforce the label's reputation as one of the prime outlets for stoned grooves and jazzy jams. Not only does this collection sound as a well thought-over unity, timely alternating streetsounds and hiphop jams with ambient, lounge, nu-jazz and classic house sounds, but as a fine surplus not one of the 13 featured tracks can be labelled boring or of lesser quality - still one of the main hazards in the compilation bizz. So what do we get served to? Killer tracks from Peter Kruder (uptempo breaks with lots of percussion), Universal Principles (latin tribal esthetics from the reliable Soma outlet), Burnt Friedmann (estranged µ-ziq influenced and xylophone-supported jazz with a twist of muzak), a splendidly versatile breakbeat/house cut by cool frenchy StŽphane A (with influences ranging from Afro and Ragga to Carl Craig and Kerri Chandler all rolled into one superb joint), some great lounge sounds by El Gran Lapofsky, nearly tear-jerking instrumental post-rock sounds from Bonobo and - last but not least - Jolly Mukherjee with the Madras Cinematic Orchestra, combining an Indian classical violin section with dramatic drum'n'bass to maximum effect. And these are only the real toppers, 'cause we encounter other fine contributions from Glasgow's Solar House, Kimbu Kimra and Shuriken. An obligatory compilation that should keep you warm and cosy all through the freezing and uninviting winter days.
