This new album by Funker Vogt (their fifth) is all you could expect from the electro/EBM/cybergoth act. The songs are powerful, with heavy beats, dark bass lines, trance melodies, distorted vocals, and military and futuristic themes. These are the basic ingredients for any Funker Vogt album; so also for Survivor. Why not? Why should they change something that works just fine? Just listen, for example, to opening track (and single) 'Date of Expiration,' which is a good dance track in the tradition of 'Tragic Hero' and 'Gunman.'
For the first time on an album, Funker Vogt uses guitars on Survivor. They have been using guitars for quite some time now in their live sets, but the additional guitars on a couple of tracks on this album are not really a success. I prefer the plain electronic songs.
Funker Vogt also explores a more poppy side than ever before, with the song 'Lügner!' This track sounds almost like an '80s disco classic. The best track is 'Stolen Thoughts,' which comes the closest to classic EBM music. The tempo is a bit slower than usual, which benefits the powerful beats even more than on the other songs.
Survivor is not a very original electro/EBM album, but in any case, it is an effective one. There is no doubt this album will produce a couple more club hits for Funker Vogt.
