Some records seem good the first time and turn out to be brilliant; others seem nice and turn out to be average. But the first time I listened to International, I knew this was gonna be a difficult review. FSK (an abbreviation of ???) is a German band that plays both German and English material. International is produced and mixed by David Lowery (Cracker) who also wrote a couple of songs and plays along. FSK covers Cracker's 'Euro trash girl' complete with old-fashioned drum samples and vocoders. They also cover 'She acts like a woman should' and explain: "Mae West, half Bavarian, half Irish, wouldn't have sung this. But Marilyn Monroe did. It must have definitely been written by a man, though." After reading the explanations of all the songs it even became harder to write something (original), so I let FSK speak again. On '1+1=3': "Male-to-female transsexual falls in love with female-to-male transsexual. Darwinist chorus says 'Why can't your man be a lesbian?' Complicated subject, easy music." And on 'Mark Twain in Heidelberg': "He travelled Germany and wrote about masturbation. Today, American barracks and German restaurants along the Neckar River bear his name." The other 19 songs breath - among other things - waltzes, Berlin in the twenties, bad taste and lo-fi; and have titles like 'El Pastor Aleman', 'Mein Kubano girl', 'When Amish go bad' and 'Dachshund waltzer' (Dachel waltz). My favourites are 'Das schlechteste Land der Welt' (with a mandolin), the totally over-the-top cover of 'To the other woman' and 'Jane Fonda Lied' (with an accordion and a washboard). I still don't know if this record is brilliant, crap or over the top - it can't be somewhere in the middle. So, decide for yourself - I'm sorry.
