One of the most original and oldest bands in the Electronic Body Music / industrial dance scene is Front Line Assembly. Around since the mid-eighties, they have never been away, and led by former Skinny Puppy member Bill Leeb (a.k.a. Wilhelm Schroeder) this band has set the standard for industrial dance music more than once. Front Line Assembly's newest release is another step away from their EBM / industrial dance background. Like on their last two albums 'FLAvour Of The Weak' and 'Implode' the songs on this album are built around more diverse beats than most of the bands in this genre. FLA still makes use of atmospheric melodies and catchy refrains like they always did but go beyond the sound of their past and their heirs. There are some trance influences in tracks like 'Dead Planet' and 'Existance' and a trance bassline is used in 'Backlash'. Besides that their are a lot of dance beats on this record instead of the straight 4/4 beat that is used most of the time in this kind of music. Songs like 'Epitaph' and 'Krank It Up' are good examples of this with good dance beats with a hint of drum and bass to it. But there is also still enough 'old' FLA to this album to appeal to the older fans like lots of dark atmospheres, distorted vocals and heavy beats. This album is not really dancefloor orientated. Past FLA records did have more danceable songs than this new release. Most of the tracks are perhaps too complex and often somewhat too slow for the average industrial dance fan. But with this album FLA shows again growth and progress in their musical capability and music programming skills. I can't say anything else than that this is another great album by a great band.
