It had been a while for sure that genuine techno made waves @volgaTowers. So we felt compelled to report to our readers that techno is not ready to be buried just yet. Well, that was in any case the impression we gathered after exposure to 'Mach 1', an excellent selection from the catalogue of Frisbee Tracks, a label we must admit had passed us by completely. Up till now that is. Mixed by German technolord Roland Casper it inevitably retains a pumping techno rhythm. But the funky feel of the hi-hats and the overall fresh, eighties poppy sounds made us forget about the average velocity. The core is of course stomping, percussive tech but the crossovers to other related genres are everywhere. In a mere 70 minutes we had close encounters with vocoder electro; epically swelling Detroit synths; very tongue-in-cheek oldskool sounds; industrial body music à la Nitzer Ebb and Front 242; fat Basic Channel waves; a legion of pulsating breakdowns and build-ups; some German trance; some breaks; and of course the very en-vogue vocals to mask the Groove that won't stop. Some fine piece of work from the mostly unheard of contributors and from wizard Roland Casper, who puts all his experience and skills in a shimmering mix that grabs you by the balls (sorry ladies!) from the first second up till the last. The best mixed techno comp of the still young year.
