Finally the new release of Freedom Call in my record machine and now it is ready for his first digital crusade. Freedom Call guides you from melancholy depths via hard rock passages to the highest heights, through a rock of stone in one night's space, reflecting the basic feeling of the fairytale-like storyline of their new album 'Crystal Empire'. This second studio album of the German melodic speed metal band is a continuation of their debut 'Stairway To Fairyland', containing their mixture of crystal-clear choir chanting parts, space synthesizers and classic piano, heavy metal guitars and Mister Dan Zimmerman (Gamma Ray) behind the drums. It results in a full blend album with the most diverse atmospheres of science fiction, heroic tales of old, which gives me a good Heavy Metal feeling! Freedom Call is one of the speed metal newcomer acts of the last ten years, if you dig bands like "Gamma Ray", "Hammerfall" and "Luca Turilli", then I think 'Crystal Empire' is your cup of coffee. Check out the track 'The Quest' which lasts 7.32 minutes, featuring all the levels of the bands capabilities, from musical tornadoes and planet-sized storms to an aerial squid on a world of all atmosphere and clouds and lightning. My personal favorite track is 'Palace Of Fantasy'; it has a ghastly atmosphere of Medieval Folk with killer guitar versus synthesizer solo' s and great folkloristic choir parts. The whole concept behind records like this remind me strongly of literature like "Frank Herbert' s Dune" and "Jack Vance", writers who combine medieval saga storytelling with science fiction space elements. This kind of music suits perfect for me to combine with beer and some arcane literature to get myself enchanted by the album's positive aura and fantasy elements. Fetch me some wine.
