When Frankie Sparo was in Holland at the beginning of the year as support act for A Silver Mt. Zion, he also found the opportunity to play some songs for Dutch radio. They turned out to be great recordings (live on two-track), and luckily Constellation and Frankie Sparo decided to release the recordings as this wonderful EP. For that tour, Frankie rearranged most of his songs from his debut 'My Red Scare' with the help of members of A Silver Mt. Zion, and that makes this EP a whole new experience. For example, 'Here Comes the Future' has been given a totally reworked drum-programming, making the song almost uptempo for Sparo understandings. The tone of songs remains unaltered: sad and desperate. But at the end, the song gets somewhat lighter due to the beautiful contrasts between melancholic violins and the almost cheerful programmed rhythms. Really stunning. Also, the other two songs from his debut, 'Diminish Me NYC' and 'The Night That We Stayed In', sound completely different, probably because the versions are more energetic. If you can speak of "energetic" when it comes to music like this, which is the saddest and slowest lo-fi music you can imagine. In comparison with Frankie Sparo, Will Oldham seems to be a really cheerful guy to be around. But it's beautiful all the same, and the way Frankie treats the Stones song 'I Am Waiting', with only his voice and his guitar, is superb. Let's hope Frankie comes again really soon.
