Hooray, it's Frank Black's fifth album (and the second one with his backing band the Catholics), which means that he has now equalled his former legendary band the Pixies in output. I wish I could say the same quality-wise, but unfortunately his previous two, 'Frank Black & The Catholics' and 'The Cult Of Ray', were minor disappointments. This one isn't - it's a return to everything that made his first album great (and so different from the typical in-your-face abrasiveness of the Pixies): more melodic, more hooks and more diverse in style, all the more remarkable if one considers that it was recorded live in a week's time to two-track tape. But it's all here: plaintive Neil Young-esque yearning on 'Bad Harmony', ominous, almost menacing overtones on 'I Switched You', eccentricity on 'Billy Radcliffe', the manifesto 'I Want Rock & Roll', and much more, sealed off by the perfect album closer, the quiet 'So. Bay'.
