The quality of Frank Black's records started to decline when he decided to go punk rock with 'The Cult Of Ray'. That album and its successors were not bad, but Black can do better than "not bad". The overemphasis on guitar noodling was especially frustrating. Luckily. on 'Dog in the Sand', that punk rock approach has been abandoned. Less fortunate is that Black has decided to go for alt.country now. That is, the songs are instantly recognisable as Frank Black songs, but in alt.country arrangements. It took a few listens to get used to it, but, although far from perfect, it's better than the punk thing, because alt.country has more room for different types of instrumentation. Which solves the monotony problem that plagued the previous albums. The songs themselves are better too, with 'Blast Off', 'Robert Onion', and 'Bullet' as the standouts. But again: Black can do even better than this. Which pretty much summarizes 'Dog in the Sand': better than the last albums, but still no 'Teenager of the Year'. What is absolutely brilliant about the album, however, is the production. It was recorded live to two-track, without cuts, but sounds better than a lot of ProTool-engineered productions. This is superb musicianship, and if Black takes the band with which he recorded the album on tour we're in for some great shows.
