Hailing from the Fort Thunder scene in Providence, RI that has given birth to such acts as Lightning Bolt and Pink and Brown comes Forcefield. However, this band does not produce skull shaking noise rock like the aforementioned. Instead the foursome produce oscillator rich textures that sounds like the band recorded the sound of androids vomiting and large, tin robots pissing on one another to the tune of Lou Reed’s Metal Machine Music. Don’t get me wrong though, I really dig it.
Before even listening to this record one can gather a sense that this will not be a standard rock band. The album shows multiple shots of the Forcefield members—Patootie Lobe, Meerk Puffy, Gorgon Radeo and Le Geef donning hand knitted dayglow outfits that look like the byproduct of the costume designer of Star Wars taking waaaaay too much acid. But it is the perfect visual atmosphere for the soundscapes eking out of the speakers.
Forcefield produces multiple layered, oscillator doodles that defy common song structure and remains engaging. The songs have no markings of traditional rock, giving them a truly out-of-this-world feel. The group constantly changes the sound’s texture, shape and color to produce instrumental avant-garde that goes easy on pretension and heavy on imagination. While this record is certainly not for everyone, those who are open minded and have a hankering for something totally different will be very satisfied with this recording. Fans of avant-garde composers like Terry Riley, oscillator weirdness like the Silver Apples and current soundscapists Black Dice will enjoy Roggaboggas.
