Every once in a while an album will come along possessed with such great beauty and melodic mood swings that it seems impossible to tear yourself away from it, let alone escape its seductive charms. For Stars' third record, 'We Are All Beautiful People,' is such an album. The San Francisco-based band paint on a broad canvas, and the many pleasures that these songs have to offer are hidden in the details, in the background, in the shadows...
The music from opener 'I Got Connected' could very well have been taken from a 200-year-old battle hymn, such is the melody timeless and grand, such is the plaintive urgency of singer Carlos Forster's vocals. 'How It Goes,' which would otherwise have been a more or less straight-ahead rock (albeit extremely catchy) song, finds a thin layer of beautiful fragility transposed onto its surface, courtesy of music box-like frenetic keyboard stylings. 'Beautifully...' sounds purely hopeless and distraught, while 'In Open Plains' crashes in with a film-like score, brought to the big screen in glorious Technicolor, exposing moments of wonderful clarity and pure, honest splendour. Violent Femmes jauntiness is juxtaposed with Radiohead's special textures, and the results are nothing short of blissful.
'We Are All Beautiful People' is such a promising album. For Stars make cinematic, fragile music, brutally honest at times, but always with that certain glimmer of hope on the horizon. Elvis Costello once sang about "indoor fireworks," and that is exactly what this band offer us. Tinkling pianos, the fuse is lit, the build-up is slow... Reaching that crescendo, the melodies and words come tumbling down like a roller coaster in the form of a big bang of sonic wondrousness, finally slowly fizzing out into subtler tones and hues.
