Aural proof of "if it ain't broken, don't fix it." Here we have the
latest CD from one of the best generic death metal bands today.
Fleshcrawl, a five-piece hailing from Germany, seem to have not made
a lot of progression from their previous album, 'As Blood Rains From The
Sky...'. However, for these death metallers, that is always a good
thing. It's a blessing to be able to not change your sound, but still
be considered head of the class. They seem to have this skill like
label-mates Amon Amarth. There has been very little, if any change from
either band over the past couple years, but they still manage to put out
great albums of music we all know and love.
For 'Soulskinner', Fleshcrawl brings us ten more tracks (including
a Judas Priest cover) of their riff-packed death metal. Listening to
any song off of this CD, it's hard to find exactly what it is that
makes them the best generic death metal band. Their style of play is
nothing all that original or ground-breaking. The vocals are your
usual throat. Drumming is fast, but not particularly exhilerating.
The only thing that sets this band appart from the rest is their
music-writing. Song after song Fleshcrawl brings forth some very
brutal, fast and extremely catchy riffs that get stuck in your head
for days. If you don't believe me, refer to the first two riffs of the
album!! As soon as those first couple riffs played on my CD player,
I was grinning like a pedophile at a day-care centre. They are that
great!
Overall, what else can be said about this album other than "it's
a Fleshcrawl album"? If you're a fan of Fleshcrawl, it's safe to say
that you know what to expect from them, and any new music they write
isn't going to stray too far from their previous. If you're not a fan,
then it would definetely be worth your time to listen to a few of their
songs, and seeing if they are for you. Give them a few tries; it may
take 3 or 4 listens to get into it. They aren't the kind of band that
will get any metal fan excited, but if you like death metal which is
driven by fast, brutal, unmerciful riffs and the usual vocals, you
won't be disappointed with the masters of the genre.
