It seems that in 2001 the Belgian music scene finally encounters something economists like to call diminishing marginal utility. For years they've been treating us with unique and suprising bands, one after the other, but with Flavour'dish it looks like we've finally hit the bottom of the barrel. Although their music occasionally has a sort of a jazzy feeling, it's obvious that this quintet from Antwerp has been "inspired" by dEUS and Zita Swoon - especially the singer tries really hard to sound like Tom Barman and/or Stef Camil Karlens - but sadly they haven't got an ounce of their talent. It's mainly about songwriting: In the eleven songs here there is very little that grabs your attention, let alone in a positive way. It's all so bland and unremarkable, the organ lick in 'Dancing in the Head-Lights' sounds promising - but that's probably because it sounds like something that could be from Bauer's excellent new 'Can't Stop Singing' album - but the rest of the song is just so dull and laborious. And the same goes for every other track on this album. You can hear these five guys tried really hard and, believe me, that's not a good thing, because it makes the 44 minutes this album lasts seem to go on forever. Life's too short for albums like this.
