The first 5 tracks of 'Welcome To The Octagon', Fireballs Of Freedom's third album (no, I don't know their first two albums either), scorches the eardrums with chaotic psycho-blues that should not only appeal to die-hard genre freaks, but also to fans of emo-core bands like ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and Icarus Line who never really liked the soft parts, for FOF's attack patterns are a bit more complicated than usual. Because of this it is most likely that it will take a few listens before the beauty of a track like 'Skalawag' with its supreme riffs appears from the chaos.
Then halfway the album, Fireballs Of Freedom do something brilliant: they put 'Got My Soul Back' on the album. Instead of screaming there's suddenly soulful vocals over guitars that howl like homesick wolfs. It is as if your 180-pound heavy weight friend who nearly killed you before because you ended the friendship on account of him behaving more and more psychotically suddenly falls on his knees, crying how you could have done this to him after all those years. Then, after what seems only seconds, he attacks you again with refound energy with 'Crumblin' Stone', 'Panties Off' and finally delivers the knock-out with 'Vs. The Universe'. All the while you still have tears in your eyes from his breakdown in 'Got My Soul Back'. And when you hit the ground you can't help but think there was some sort of melancholy in those hits after that song that was missing before.
