Cover art can be pretty damn deceptive. For example, take Fingathing's 'Check It Out', a CD single release accompanying their debut longplayer 'The Main Event'. The grotesquely humourous illustration of a monster shoving another creature's head into a computer monitor practically screams of late-90s rap-metal angst. Thankfully, hidden beneath this bloody scene are three charming crossover hip-hop/dance gems constructed by UK DMC finalist Peter Parker and double-bass player Sneaky, both known for their work in labelmates Rae & Christian's live band. The title track is a crafty slice of turntable wizardry embellished with plenty of electronic warbling, all hashed out over laid-back hip-hop beats. 'Mulletfunk' follows a similar aesthetic with its simple, old-skool flavoured hip-hop rhythms, this time adding cleverly looped and scratched vocal snippets here and there. Lest the atmosphere verge towards the silly, forceful lower strings take the song towards more sinister territory. 'You Fly Me' is a lovely number full of the warmth and richness of such lower string registers, creating a relaxed, easy-going, yet somewhat somber mood. A far cry from formulaic hip-hop and dance-by-numbers, this release hints at more interesting moments to come from the Fingathing camp. Perhaps the cover image does suit the music after all: Both are unconventional, strangely familiar, and wickedly entertaining.
