With last year’s masterpiece Kittenz and Thee Glitz house veteran Felix Stallings better known as Felix Da Housecat finally made the breakthrough to a larger audience after 15 years of producing. A year later Felix presents another infinitely playable album, this time as a DJ, that not only works as a companion piece to Kittenz and Thee Glitz but also to the epochal American Gigolo mix cd. Excursions is of the same quality as American Gigolo and uses a similar built-up of electro morphing into a pleasurable brand of cyclical techno. Again Jeff Mills makes an appearance (here it’s Ticket To Thrillville) and again it’s surprising how much better his work sounds these days in an electro instead of a non-stop techno set. The overall quality of the mix is outstanding, with a good built-up and smooth mixing skills.
The album also very handily collects a lot of seminal Felix Da Housecat related remixes. His own remixes of Dot Allison’s Substance and Ladytron’s Playgirl feature another of those brilliant driving electro riffs Felix seems to have patented since Kittenz and Thee Glitz. On the receiving end there are the quintessential Laurent Garnier remix of Silver Screen – Shower Scene which turns the electro hit into a lovely rolling dance track and Royksopp building a seductively fluid funk track out of What Does It Feel Like. That quartet alone is worth the price of admission but the undeniable highlight of the collection is Take A Walk (Youngsters Bass Remix) by Bolz Bolz, a lachrymose track that works both as an sublime dance tune and a melancholic ode to living in the neon drenched cities of the 21st century. Take A Walk fits perfectly in the Felix Da Housecat aesthetics which seem to be obsessed with presenting a brand of dance that is by far the most human(e) music in living memory. The city is our soul, we dance, we cry, we feel pride to be alive at just this moment in time.
