If there might have been any question about the whereabouts of Favez's Roots, with an album title like this there can be no more doubt. Not that it matters for the music, by the way. They call themselves a rock'n'roll band, and that is exactly what they are. Favez, dwelling on the mighty Sticksister label that brought us Kevlar as well, are a rock band who likes their guitar sound as thick as mud. Not unlike bands such as Soundgarden and Tad in their glory years. Producer of '(From Lausanne, Switzerland)' is John Agnello, who worked as well with big names like Mark Lanegan, Dinosaur Jr., and Nebula.
As the latter two already imply, John Agnello knows how to create a big rock sound, and that really is the biggest feature on this album; there are little albums that sound as fat and crunchy as this one. Luckily, the drums and vocals didn't disappear in the mix, making it a well-balanced sound. Musically, Favez remind one of quite some names: the aforementioned Soundgarden and Tad, Therapy? in their 'Troublegum' years, Radiohead back in the days of 'The Bends' and 'OK Computer', and even some emo and hardcore influences from the likes of Helmet and Fugazi. Only 'It Rains Like Hell' is too obvious in copying Radiohead; the rest are tags that stick for a couple of seconds in each song and then simply have to let go. Favez don't blindly follow their inspirations. Any criticism? Yes. Sometimes the vocal melodies and song structures (especially in the melody structures of the verses) are a tad too similar to each other. Luckily, the ideas themselves are really good. Favez are a band who want to rock, and they do it well. They might not be that original, but when all is done as presented here, there is nothing to complain about.
