We at volgaTowers cultivate a healthy distrust towards the remixed album. Since the beginning of techno times the concept 'remix-album' has in fact resulted in little more than the cleaning up -in a hopefully interesting way- of someone else's uninteresting originals. But at Compost HQ they have carefully avoided the mentioned pitfalls. The concept, this time, ain't too bad: invite the cream of Vienna -we suspect there is simply no crop in Vienna- and let them take over. You should already know about Peter Kruder's ultra-groovy dub electro take on 'Tel Aviv' from our ecstatic review and its subsequent inclusion in our Best Of 2001, but, as it is 'The Compost Way', there are more diamonds to be gathered here. We take off quietly with the free-floating Dzihan + Kamien and the panoramic dub-electro of Stereotyp, after which Stéphane A. nestles himself in a nu jazz house sofa. From there we meet the creaky dub piano's of Pole and the lazy lounge of Salvador Group, encounter the healing electronic kitsch-jazz of Kyoto Jazz Massive, stop at Dixon's formidable deep house mix and wander into Charlie Dark's heavenly fusion of Latin vibes and moody keys. It is Blue Foundation that wrap up the umpteenth super release from Compost with a stoned-out, tribute-to-Compost-style hiphop joint. We think there's no confusion possible at all: Compost has become the most reliable imprint in the wide world of beats. And our guess is that there's no stopping those Bavarians for some time to come.
