Textstar presents a collection of material taken from four twelve-inches that Jan Jelinek released using the Farben name. Under the Farben guise, Jelinek produces a more open and accessible version of his clicks-and-cuts model that incorporates disco, house, and Detroit techno elements (Beautone, one of the highlights, again reminds us how important an influence Carl Craig's Paperclip People project has become over the years). As with most experimental producers rediscovering the "simplicity" of the dance floor, Jelinek creates his best work when operating under the constraint of rhythm. Especially his clicks, not so much his cuts, find lovely ways to bubble through the disco pulses, resulting in a deceptively light dance music with sunny details, that for all its lightness of touch, requires a few spins to work its way into conscious hearing. Beautiful packaging (including pointillist artwork of the four twelve-inches, supposedly featuring portraits of R.A.F. members) and the display of a wicked sense of humor when it comes to naming his tracks (the unsurpassable Live At The Sahara Tahoe, 1973) complete another essential compilation of European shape-shifting dance music, just below the standards set by Luomo and Basic Channel. The brain, you see, likes to dance its thoughts into existence from time to time.
