The Ex has many faces. Started many years ago as an Amsterdam-based punk band, and gradually transformed into a hard rocking avantgarde collective. 'Een Rondje Holland' (a trip around The Netherlands) is a live recording, recorded on the Holland festival, where The Ex played together with a whole bunch of other Dutch musicians as a collective called Ex-Orkest. New lyrics (in Dutch) were written by Jan Mulder, a former professional soccerplayer with literary ambitions. The outcome from this special project is stunning. All music is written by The Ex, and completely rearranged to fit for a full orchestra. Through this process, and especially through the addition of many brass instruments, the powerful music gets a whole new face. For example, The Ex's biggest 'hit', 'State of Shock', not only sounds different because of the new lyrics and title 'Kokend Asfalt' (Boiling Asphalt), but also through all the added instruments, which makes it reminiscent of Motherhead Bug, a great arty collective which released 'Zambodia' in the early nineties. Still, The Ex didn't lose any of their punkrock power, and this makes 'Een Rondje Holland' a fascinating trip through the - mostly unexplored - territory of punk and orchestra, not completely unlike that other great Dutch band De Kift. Add to this the sharp and sometimes funny observations of Jan Mulder, and you'll get an impressive gem of an album.
