Etoile Noire | The Breath Of Kali

The Breath of Kali is the debut album of Italian band Etoile Noire. They claim to play "goth 'n' roll," which is nothing more than the combination of plain rock, punk, and a little bit of stoner rock mixed with a bit of darkness, according to them. The title track is pretty much a grunge song, and other tracks like 'Melt' and 'Ascension' are also very close to grunge songs with a punk flavor to them. Other songs, like 'Eyelids Covering Mirrors' and 'Fort of Sand' are more like ballads, are well written, and have a nice mood to them. Besides that, these tracks are the most original ones on the album and show some sort of sound that could be called the band's own. When it comes to the "darkness" part, I must admit that is hard to find, which is not a bad thing. Maybe only in the Christian Death cover 'This Is Heresy' there is a bit darkness, but mainly because it is a Christian Death song. Etoile Noire shouldn't promote their music as dark or goth. They don't play very happy music, but it isn't that dark either. The Breath of Kali is just another rock record; nothing more nothing less.
