Emperor: formerly the leader of the black metal pack. However, fans have
watched them slowly slip away, and have their "black metal gods" title
usurped by such bands as Marduk, Darkthrone and Dark Funeral. And upon hearing
the early works of Tairach and other underground black metal bands, it's hard
to picture Emperor being able to keep up with the soon-to-be flood of intense
black metal.
Nonetheless, it's also important to remember that with Emperor, you can't really
expect anything. They could very easily throw an epic album of nearly perfect
black metal on your lap, or they could also give you 'Prometheus: The Discipline
of Fire & Demise'. Bad album, you ask? Well, not necessarily. More like it's
much less than a band like Emperor should be dishing out. There's a short intro,
then a nice little keyboard piece, then a killer guitar riff mimicing that
keyboard part. A fantastic start to this album! Sadly, it doesn't go too far
after that. After the first 2:04, the album doesn't progress to anywhere that
one might hope it does. Instead, it tends to drag on for the next 50 minutes,
catching your attention only once in a while with very few good riffs.
Considering I've heard that this is (supposedly) their last album, I was
expecting to hear an album with some of the most intense, guitar driven music
Emperor could write. Instead, I get this nearly Cradle of Filth-like album, with
small influences of Zyklon or Myrkskog (okay, slight exaggeration...but it's
just not all that it should be). 90% weak guitar riffs, shoddy production (are
you sure this was recorded in Akkerhaugen Lydstudio?!), badly sung clean vocals,
boring drumming and terrible keyboards. It is not that there are too many
keyboards on this album, it is just that when there are keyboards, one
tends to get confused, look at their CD player and just say "WHAT?!".
For example, is that hooting 'In The Wordless Chamber'? Most of the keyboards on
this album are 100% cheese!!
Artwork too has taken a step down from previous efforts. A few pages are
simply white with grey blotches of paint and the lyrics printed in a regular
text. Another page has a greenish-grey background, a chain going across
diagonally and the word "Depraved" printed across the page. Lame. And
to match the artwork, most of the lyrics lack any real depth to them. "As
him, though not like him, for him, as all, but closed, like them, not him."
To be fair it has to said that is the worst of the bunch.
Upon hearing this album, I found myself asking "has Emperor lost nearly
everything that has made them great?" Sadly, the word "yes" was
running through my mind loud and clear. However, it was almost a relief to read
on the back of the booklet that Ihsahn was soley resposible for writing all
music, lyrics and arrangements. This means our good man Samoth (or is it
Zamoth, now?) probably still has more black metal juice in him to continue on
entertaining me with Zyklon. So it's time to take out this Emperor CD and throw
in Zyklon. Aaaahh...that's the stuff!!
