It took five years before this nice folksinger from Boston returned with The Speed Of Trees. In the meantime a live album and descent collection of B-sides have seen the light of day. The real return of Ellis Paul comes with this brand new collection of folk tunes, in which the influences of James Taylor, Joni Mitchell and Bob Dylan shine through. Sometimes it seems as if the late Ellis Paul struggles in finding a clear structure for his 4-minute novels. It is only when you more than once return to this disc and play it over and over again that the Speed Of Trees reveals its real beauty. The singing of Ellis Paul and the stripped down instrumentation come together as if The Speed Of Trees is some kind of complicated puzzle. Romantic ballads and beautiful road songs, like Breaking Through The Radio for example, are always welcome. However, the real gem is a forgotten lyric from Woody Guthrie. Paul Ellis sings it as if nothing has changed since 1955. This makes you wonder why Woody’s sister Nora Guthrie decided to have Bill Bragg en Wilco sing on Mermaid Avenue volumes 1 and 2. God’s Promise is simply the best song of The Speed Of Trees. A welcome return of a troubadour.
