'A Dream in Sound' was already released in 1999, but two years later Elf Power also try to conquer Europe. And they're right. This Athens, Georgia, quartet is from the Elephant 6 clan (Olivia Tremor Control, Neutral Milk Hotel, Beulah, Apples in Stereo) and picks the positive aspects of these bands. The basis of the music lies within the catchy melody, and after that it is all up to Elf Power. Singing together in 'High Atop the Silver Branches', an acoustic in-betweener 'Willowy Man', weird samples in 'We Dream in Sound' changing into a normal song (the Olivia Tremor Contol concept), and normal poppy things like 'Olde Tyme Waves' and 'Simon'. It is not the music that is original, but the combination of it that makes it quite unique. The singing seems quite similar to Grandaddy, a little high and weird. A good fit with the rest. The only superfluous thing about 'A Dream in Sound' is the psychedelic bonus track. Especially because the album should have ended with the warm 'O What A Beautiful Dream'. Listen to the album, and put it on repeat, because after a few spins you'll still be surprised.
