At the moment the best stoner-release of the year 2001 is in my cd-player. Thirty seconds after the moment I pushed play I realised this album would stay at that position for a long time. El Caco were formed in Lillestrom near Oslo, Norway. Oyvind, Thomas and Anders have been playing together since 1998 and have built up a reputation for being a phenomenal live-band. In autumn 2000 the time was right to record a debut album. Listening to the result called 'Viva' makes clear each member has its own taste in music, otherwise it wouldn't be possible to record such a varied album. It features influences of Kyuss, Motorpsycho in their Blissard-period, parts that remind one of grunge bands like Soundgarden or Stone Temple Pilots, but also, and I was nicely surprised by that, some New Wave/Gothic passages, especially in 'Shine'. But the most important thing of all is that El Caco succeeds in keeping their own unique sound. 'Viva' absolutely doesn't sound like a chaotic gathering of styles. Each song is constructed upon a very strong, typical El Caco-groove and is performed very, very powerfully, with vocalist Oyvind leading the way. He has a true turbo on his vocal chords! QotSA were the first band that succeeded in finding a new, more radio-friendly, real song-based style of stonerrock that would appeal to a bigger audience. Looks like it won't be that lonely at the top for them anymore.
