"This record was recorded in an hour and written in half that time." That's the statement on the website of Duke Fame. If that is true, then I can compliment them on the record they have delivered, because there aren't many bands that could have done it faster. 'Regrets,' the opening song, jumps out of your stereo, with a cheerful guitar line and a nice refrain. Twelve uplifting songs are presented here, most of which all sound the same to me. They all have a cheerful guitar line and nice melodies, but there isn't much variety on this record. It's a nice album to play in a supermarket — very quiet in the background, so nobody can hear it. Duke Fame aren't bad songwriters, but Eric Zwieg, vocalist of the band, always attracts your attention before you can even listen to a song intensively. Zwieg could be the son of Michael Stipe and Neil Young. But not in a positive way. He has an annoying, tedious voice. After a few listens to Regrets, you wish Duke Fame had a singer with a stronger voice, a voice that doesn't sound so breakable. That would definitely benefit the songs. Happily, sometimes the other members fill the songs with some backing vocals. Of course, it is too early to write Duke Fame off. Who knows, maybe some day they will surprise me; there certainly is some potential. But if they want to surprise me and you, they have to write some better songs. And after that, they've got plenty of time left, so there is still a chance to find another singer. Or to send Eric Zwieg to some singing lessons.
