Tsumi is the second full-length release by Dutch most promising metal band of the last three years, Dreadlock Pussy. Most of the time their music is defined as nu-metal. This is, of course, a lousy genre name. If there must be a specific term to pigeonhole this and other so-called nu-metal bands, I would go for emo-core.
The band claims this second album is a new beginning for them. But they didn't have a bad start in the first place, so that's a bit weird. Upon the release of their debut album, Sharp Instead, Dreadlock Pussy received plenty of positive attention in the media, and they played at almost every venue in the Netherlands. Maybe, by "new beginning," they mean they are going to try to reach a new audience outside their native country. With a record this good, that should be possible.
Tsumi has a very strong opening track, Ever Decreasing Circles, and the record maintains the high quality of that song throughout. Dreadlock Pussy display growth in songwriting and musical skills, both individual and as a group. The songs on this album are much better structured than on the previous one. Besides that, there is more tension, dynamics, and atmosphere within the songs. In the time between their first album and this one, the band has created a sound of their own. There are still elements of contemporary metal acts, such as Korn and the Deftones, but there are also some influences to be found in original emo-core bands. Songs like Akemi and Effigy display some Tool-like spherical elements, while songs like Mild and Token have Faith No More-ish song structures. There is even a bit of a funky track, Through A Dot's Eye, playing like an ultra-heavy, emo Rage Against The Machine song. Dreadlock Pussy fuses all these elements into a markedly original sound of their own.
With Tsumi, Dreadlock Pussy proves to be a force to be reckoned with in the near future. This record could well be their introduction to an international audience.
