When we get a new Belgian rock release, it's important to keep our eyes wide open. Especially when there's this coincidence, that the bass player from Dr. Pepper Family has Dewaele as a last name. You know, just like the brothers from Soulwax, or in 2 Many DJs, if you like. But before you start to wonder if this is the new Belgian sensation, stop wondering — it isn't. Where the album starts quite interestingly — but not breathtakingly — with rockers 'Wasteland' and 'Million's Bill,' the album turns out to be too full of fillers that just fly through your mind and disappear after they're over. The concept isn't that bad, by the way. It sounds like other Belgian bands Fence and Metal Molly, but then without the humor and with more rock 'n' roll. And rock 'n' roll is what the audience wants at the moment, considering the success of bands like the Liars, the Datsuns and the Von Bondies. Dr. Pepper Family isn't exactly what the audience really wants. Of course, it's not all that bad: They can be proud of the acoustic 'Cherise,' a nice, feel-good song. And the last minutes of guitar jamming on 'Spanish Guitars' really rocks! So the positive thinker will hope to hear more of these things in the future and perhaps a few songs on a compilation; the negative thinker will regard this as just a rock band that will come and go again.
