Square waves and white noise are good things when properly applied. When added to a dance floor — on the rocks, shaken not stirred, and topped off with a little paper umbrella — the resulting drink is ambrosia and a bit heady, not to mention damn sexy.
Dot Allison is a superb Coyote Ugly mixologist, and I think I love her (a not-so-subtle reference to the song, I Think I Love You, on her new album We Are Science). With obvious roots in Gary Numan, Animotion, Joy Division/New Order, Depeche Mode, she adds touches of Blondie and Kraftwerk, and the result is a sound that can fill the disco or be at home with a bottle of brandy and an adventurous lover in a cozy living room.
There are lots of retro '70s and '80s keyboard effects, but the effect to me isn't entirely retro, due to the punchy production of Dave Fridmann and Dot herself. The sound ranges from the bass-heavy dance vibe of the opening track, We're Only Science, with its nod to Animotion's Obsession and early Depeche Mode, to the calming but still edgy closer Hex Lover, which reminds me oddly of Cowboy Junkies plugged into a Korg.
Just when you think that the cool exterior of the music is going to make the emotional core unapproachable, Allison manages to reel you in, like a Siren beckoning you onto the rocky shoals. Being dashed on the rocks is a supreme pleasure.
My early favorite is the second track, Substance, which is the first single from the album. Mechanical, like Some Great Reward-era Depeche Mode, her vocals evoke a disco-age Deborah Harry, and the blend is irresistible.
This Glasgow artist is firing on all cylinders, creating an album both heavy and evocative. Highly recommended.
Oh yeah — don't forget to tip your bartender.
