Division Of Laura Lee guitarist/singer Per Stålberg recently said in an interview with KindaMuzik that he believed that his band would be one of the most important bands in the history of rock'n'roll. Now that debut album 'Black City' is here, it is time to judge whether there was any truth in that statement or whether it was hybris.
'Black City' is indeed filled with the high-quality rock that you expect from a band from Sweden, the country with the most great rock bands per capita. Another thing that speaks for the band is that the songs are all very accessible and catchy, but never slick or commercial. Influences include Therapy?, Fugazi, and The Strokes. The band itself also claim At The Drive-In and The Jesus And Mary Chain as inspirations, but it is hard to hear those bands in DOLL's only slightly left-of-centre rock. Another mistake the band make is that they see themselves as a post-hardcore band and opt for the dry, thin sound that goes with that genre, where a more bottom-heavy production would have made the album more in-your-face.
And that world domination? I don't think so. Division Of Laura Lee are a very good band, but offer nothing new. There have been more bands recently who have released good, but not shocking albums and were proclaimed rock's saviours by people who should've know better. So... Who knows?
