Combstock and Vogado, to you more commonly known as Zero dB, have succeeded
in building up an enviable reputation in a short while. With their remixes
for Compost (Rainer Trüby's Galicia), Ubiquity (Interfearance), and SSR
(Suba), they already conquered a hot spot in the nu-jazz quadrants. And
the (so far) unfailing Fluid Ounce label is the second of their ample
share of trumps. True, there have not been more than half a dozen releases
from the label, but with the kind of quality that is on display here, you
won't hear us complaining about compilation-itis. Zero dB themselves are
present with Come Party (their first-ever release), jazzy jumper The
Snare, and the shuffling blues of Click. But Canadians John Kong &
Moonstarr equally impress with their spacey broken jazz of Future Vision. The
seductive electro-soul of Frank De Jojo's re-creation of the funk classic
Turn Off The Lights can only be labeled sexy. And the three tracks by
latest signing Camel keep the quality and variation as high as possibly can
be for a beginning label. But the absolute highlight is provided by The
Vogado Projects. Never Come Back and Mas Fuerte Que El Sol, both featuring
the delicious vocal input of Lucy Gale, enrich the complex acid breaks of
Zero dB with sidesteps into tropical genres and the darker corners of the
deep house realm. A worthy introduction.
