Still relishing the impressive tenth birthday packages from two of the main players in the vinyl area, Peacefrog and Tresor, we're presented the ten-year balance of the Scottish spotters in techno and house matters: Soma — a label that was named after the little happy-happy-joy-joy pill from Huxley's Brave New World. Just like Tresor, Soma has always had the admirable touch of releasing the right record at the right moment. That, and the fact that they discovered Daft Punk, places their merits above all reasonable suspicion. Making a selection from a catalogue that now spans more than a hundred releases must have been a tough job, and, inevitably, there is always someone who is going to miss that one, particular track. We@volgaTowers expected some Gene Farris, who had some of his best releases on Soma. But as it is, you will not hear us complaining, given the extremely rich harvest presented before us. They kick off with what are possibly their two greatest hits: Daft Punk's Da Funk, of 1995, and last year's massive Diabla, by Funk D'Void. And from then on the Quality Recordings keep on flowing. On a quick grasp, we meet fine people such as Silicone Soul (Right On), Slam (with Positive Education, Stepback, and the heavenly Eterna, Soma's first-ever release), Chaser, Rejuvination (long forgotten, but startlingly good), Maas, 20:20 Vision, Ian Pooley, and Hipp-e&Halo. On the separately sold mixed compilation (synced by the Slam Boys), you can enjoy additional tracks by Common Factor, Aaron Carl, and Samuel L. Sessions. We reckon your techno hunger will hereafter be satisfied. Positive education indeed.
