RECORD OF THE MONTH
MAW Featuring Roy Ayers: Our Time Is Coming (Jazzanova Remix) (MAW)
At last the wet dream of every music lover with a keen ear for new directions in dance music has been plastered onto vinyl. After Vega and Gonzalez' remix for JCR's Victor Davies, Jazzanova have remixed the Masters At Work. The Berlin crew's penchant for complex broken beats and near perfect key and string arrangements are expertly combined with Ayers' trademark vibes and soothing vocals, making for a true coming together of the best of European and American electronic soul. The proverbial match made in heaven and a fitting tribute from the new heroes to the original masters.

D.C.H.: EP (12", Balihu)
Regardless of the announcement of the tenth Balihu as the final release in the series, Daniel Wang's label is already back from the dead. There is no info whatsoever on the sleeve or label but we can safely suspect Wang himself to be the man behind the scenes. So lay back for more electro-style house tunes infused with tons of spacey psychedelic synths, Rhodes, flutes and a load of crazy effects. The flip is perfect for those who are into Environ's Metro Area, with its minimal disco sounds living happily next to the feather-light horns, sad keys and old-skool disco percussion. Both tracks are also soaking wet from a Moroder-bath. Conclusion: more astounding quality from a unique artist who refuses to put out a bland record. Which is fine with us.
Twinnie: Absolution (12", Cheap)
These newcomers present their debut for Vienna's Cheap with three raw and unpolished electro-cuts. Waitin' For My Love is the case in point with a noisy industrial backbeat overlaid with the punky vocals of Edwina Vielhaber, who sounds a bit like a manic-depressive Peaches. On the flip, Again is backed with a grinding old-skool electro-loop with Vielhaber going all hysterical in-a-Nina-Hagen-style while continuously repeating 'I did it again'. After three nifty electro-loops, closing track Bearin' is a clicky deconstructed soundscape, interrupted and perverted from time to time by annoying burps and crackles, with a Vielhaber who cannot decide between whispering and screaming out loud. The silver-sleeved Cheap remains one of the most intriguing imprints on this planet.

4:20: The Funky Track (12", Classic)
Time for our monthly portion of funky endeavours on what must be the planet's most reliable provider of quality house. This previously unheard of San Fran project inevitably refers to the West-Coast lexicon, but speaks in its own tongue. The result is a fine brew of Moodymann and elegant disco-filter aesthetics that is tighter than Houdini's knots. Rob Mello's remix keeps the original's addictive groove intact, while adding soft deep house touches to the palette. Both will positively light up that floor. Which is what a Classic release should do, we reckon.

Jazzanova: Soon Part One (12", Jcr)
Even more goodies come our way from the omnipresent Jazzanova crew with the first single release out of the miraculous In Between album. The majestic Vikter Duplaix vehicle Soon is turned into Philly Soul heaven by A Touch Of Jazz (Jill Scott's production team, should you care), while on the flip West-London genius Domu does what he does best: breaking things down and building them back up while retaining the velvet soul of the vocal. Make your pick but in both cases disappointment is impossible.

King Britt Presents Scuba: Hidden Treasures (3x12", Om)
A triple vinyl-pack that is in all pretty comprehensive and contains most of Britt's remixes including his reworks for Karma, I:Cube, 4hero, UFO and Ski Oakenfull, all displaying the man's general penchant for introspective Hispanic sounds and ethereal female vocals. And the two classic Scuba tracks on Ovum, Swell and Heavenly are on there as well. Essential stuff.

Garsaadi: Frank Zaffa Remixes (12", Compost)
A track that originally appeared on the Future Sounds Of Jazz 3 and created quite a buzz in 1996 gets a welcome 12" release. The original is still very impressive, with Carl Craig-style breaks imbued with eastern motives. Remixes come courtesy of Florian Keller (electro-style with dub echoes) and Straight Ahead's Sequel (complicated beats and moody b-boy jazz plus a second more deep house mix). Good stuff as always.

African Roots: Act 2 (lp, Wackie's)
Second chapter in the African Roots series on Basic Channel's reggae spin-off. That means ten times hazy and lazy roots-dub from Mista Bullwackie. We suggest you light that spliff right now.

Alex Attias Presents The Chromatic Universe (2x12", Visions)
We found nothing but quality breaks and other nu-jazz stuff on this first compilation of Attias' label. There are solo-outings by Attias himself, collaborations with Vanessa Freeman, Dego and Paul Cornet (take heed of Idema & Co's folky Latin workout Cascade, the absolute cream of this collection) and tracks by Dego's Pavel Kostiuk project and Son Of Scientist. Essential and groundbreaking stuff that is suited for listening and dancing alike.

Various Artists: The Good Good vol. 2 (2x12", 2000 Black)
All the West-London players are duly present on this second round-up of Dego's 2000 Black. That means you can expect tracks that range from excellent via brilliant to revolutionary by the likes of Mark De Clive-Lowe, Loqate, Domu, Da One Away, Opaque and Restless Soul. West-London keeps on pushing the boundaries of innovation, so complaining is simply out of the question.
