Warp 9 | Cannone (12", Laws Of Motion)
Laws Of Motion continue to ride the winning wave. After Agent K' s
intoxicating Ladies, the incredible Neon Phusion 3-tracker, and last month's
equally essential Green Fridge 12", we stand flabbergasted again with
another out-of-this-world release. Warp 9 unleashes two techno-influenced
house stompers packed with fresh psychedelic variations on the house
template. Buttressed firmly by a Moroder-style hypnotizing groove, Cannone
itself comes in two equally spell-binding versions. And Flip The Waltzers
is, mainly thanks to the subdued-but-attention-claiming organ part, a more
than decent pretender in our monthly Moodymann-imitation contest. One that
promises to grow even better with time.
Freefrom Five | Perspex Sex Remixes (12", Classic)
Wherever we encounter Sir Ewan Pearson, he almost automatically writes
another chapter in the Book of Great Remixes. This time he tries his hand at
electro-pop. He skips the original's disco references and puts the dirty
vocal in the foreground, thereby effortlessly upgrading what was already one
of the summer's top tunes. To the flip then, where we are surprised that
Maurice Fulton has delegated an absolute stinker that wants to sound
deconstructed but instead takes away the original's power, proving once and
for all that even a wizard like Fulton should consider staying on the right
side of madness when he gets into the studio. We have come to expect more of
you, Maurice. Thanks to Pearson's dance floor bomb, nevertheless another
Classic release!
Loose Joints | Is It All Over My Face (MAW Remixes) (12", West
End)
If you are not familiar with this one already (we bet you stumbled in on its
you-got-me-love-dancin'-bit a zillion times in other house records),
it is more than time to be initiated. And this new version, remastered,
remixed, re-edited and re-equalized by Vega and Gonzalez for the label's
25th Birthday, assures you got the best seats in the house. Add another great
re-dub by the same Masters and you got a timeless classic in new, fashionable
clothes. Essential dance history, this one.
Marius | Blunted Spiral Remixes (12", Wally's Groove World)
Undercover Agency (of Panhandle and Seasons fame) manage to come up with
nothing more than a boring remix that lingers on old tricks and the
proverbial cheap kicks. Nick Calingaert does infinitely better with the
Planet E-style electronic funk of his Common Factor mix. Using the same
elements as Donaldson & De Sardi, Calingaert does pull it off with his
crystal clear production skills and gentle electro overtones that allow the
mix to develop itself slowly, up into a spacey climax. The inclusion of
Marius'
spacious, original house festival makes this (already number 40 in the
series) another winner from Wally's.
Chris Simmonds feat. Bryan Royer | In My Soul (12", Big Chief)
We just cannot seem to resist any of Chris Simmonds' records. And he
seduces us again with this fat, funky-as-hell house record that pushes all
the right buttons. Disco but not cheesy, house without getting formulaic,
effective filtering and an echoing vocal bit: Simmonds manipulates the house
template with unbelievable dexterity. On the flip, Chief Rocker Onionz drops
a brooding percussive joint in an Idjut Boys-style that doesn't miss its
effect on our feet. But it would be appreciated if he would be so kind next
time to refer those blatant guitar effects a little bit more to the
background of the mix.
Swayzak feat. Clair Dietrich | Make Up Your Mind (12",
!K7/Swayzak)
Swayzak make the masterpiece we were expecting from them for some time now.
With the aid of Markus Nikolai and singer Clair Dietrich, they deliver a
certified gem that, while being shamelessly poppy, does not deny its glitchy
roots. Dietrich's siren-like voice, as it does with Nikolai's Bushes,
penetrates the realms where underground electronics and song aspirations
create a sort of naïve beauty. Those who like Herbert — and
let's face it:
who does not? — will be enchanted. Record of the Month maybe?
