Listening to this album can be quite taxing at times, but the concept is most definitely an interesting one. Nanoloop is a software synthesizer and sequencer developed by Oliver Wittchow for the Nintendo Game Boy. The Game Boy, never exactly known for its variety of graphic and sonic splendour, is an old-fashioned game console, compared to the realistic and super-developed machines on the market today. And this is where Wittchow saw an interesting possibility: He invited musicians used to working with modern, hi-tech computer technology one would suspect is far superior to that of the Game Boy to compose music using the Nanoloop sequencer. Some had to borrow Game Boys from younger relatives, but the results show that it's not just the Powerbook that can be considered a valuable aid when it comes to the creation of music. Naturally, when undertaking such an ambitious and unique project, the results are varying, but artists such as agf/dlay (Antye Greie-Fuchs/Vladislav Delay), Merzbow, Felix Kubin, and Wittchow himself ensure that 'Nanoloop 1.0' is never less than interesting.
