Thievery Corporation hardly need any introduction. Their music, a fine blend of jazz, dub, and bossanova, has been around about just as long as that of their Austrian counterparts Kruder & Dorfmeister. The duo from Washington, DC, have been putting out quality stuff on their own label Eighteenth Street Lounge for years now, and, with the release of their excellent album 'The Mirror Conspiracy' last year, Thievery Corporation made a first step to a bigger audience and more recognition. "Time to put the other artists on ESL into the spotlight," they must've thought, and out came 'Modular Systems'. There's at least one track from every ESL artist and - of course - a large portion of Thievery Corporation, with two tracks and two remixes. Rob Garza and Eric Hilton were also responsible for the track selection. With tracks like 'Arabesque' by Nicola Conte, 'Bario Alto' by Thievery Corporation, or the wonderfully beautiful 'Solar' by Thunderball this compilation is almost like a "Best of ESL". There's the crazy bossanova of Nicola Conte, the dubby sounds of Farid and Desmond Williams, and the dreamy music of Blue States and Thunderball. There's no bad track on this one. This compilation is a nice way for non-vinyl people to catch up with the great output from ESL, and even vinyl hunters will cherish this one, as quite a few of the ESL 12"s are already out of print.
