We’ve had our doubts in the past regarding the musical tastes of the British middle-of-the-road house label Slip’n’Slide and unfortunately this new mixed collection has not been able to take them away. If you begin a mix with River Ocean’s ‘Love & Happiness’, happily, but a little bit too blatantly soliciting for cosiest, no-harm-doing party record of the year, then you can bet there will be people stepping forward to call those piano’s ‘cheeky’ and those flutes ‘summery’. We can confidently state that we’ve heard this variety of filtered Latin disco, those gently hopping basslines and those fluffy Earth, Wind and Fire imitations a mere thousand times before. And of course, Nick Holder’s ‘Da Sambafrique’ is a very good record but it is also five years old and has appeared on a myriad of compilations since. The same goes for François K.’s remix of Atmosfear’s ‘Dancing In Outer Space’: great piece of work but why include it again on the umpteenth compilation?
I wish I would be able to say at least something positive (or negative for that matter!) about the other tracks in the mix. But honesty -in the review business we are suckers for honesty- dictates we admit we had forgotten about most of them some three seconds after they had left our aural field. With the brilliant first Jazzanova album coming up, a double compilation of Joe Claussell’s Spiritual Life imprint in the pipeline and Matthew Herbert’s remixes soon to be thrown in front of the hungry masses on a double cd, we at volgaHQ, dare judge this a poor display of tired and dim-lit Ibiza-fodder. Let he who calls this ‘jazz’ step forward and take on those 40 cane-strokes? We are not impressed. And the compilation-constipation continues evermore.
