Japanese youth may be endlessly fascinated with Western culture, but there's something so irrepressibly cool about the way they take what we see as dime-a-dozen pop culture remnants and spin it into a hyper-technologized version of itself. 'Japan For Sale, Vol. 2' packs quite an impressive punch with a diverse collection of J-pop, techno, and rock tunes packaged in a slick pink, kitschy digipack.
Many of the artists featured here are familiar names, along with Japanese music fetishists: Puffy Amiyumi and Mayu Kitaki contribute fluffy cotton-candy pop-rock ditties ('Atarishii Hibi (Brand New Days)' and 'Nakanaide,' respectively); Ken Ishii takes a searing, futuristic tribal techno turn with 'Iceblink'; respected trip-hop and Japanese hip-hop pioneer DJ Krush comes in with a smooth, solemn track, 'Candle Chant'; and Yoshinori Sunahara lets loose with 'Balance,' a characteristically bleep-tastic, laid-back groove. Moving easily from the warp-speed synth pop of Polysics' 'New Wave Jacket' to the relaxed electro of Takkyu Ishino's 'Stereo Nights,' this collection stands alone as much more than a tongue-in-cheek document of slap-dash Western-influenced music. Charmingly eclectic and surprisingly infectious, 'Japan For Sale, Vol. 2' serves as an apt showcase for the country's intriguing and ever-evolving music scenes.
