I Hear Voices is a showcase of new French talent, released on Record Makers, the platform for underground music established by the duo behind French pop. A very versatile compilation, from guitar pop over clicks and cracks, a bit of underground hiphop, electropop, some beats and, why not, French chanson. This is what alternative French radio must sound like, and just like on the alternative stations within the reach of my radio receiver there's lots of mediocre music, some truly bad stuff and from time to time a gem that makes it all worthwhile. Let's start with the bad stuff: Maxence Cyrin produces the cheesiest kitch I've heard in a while, Damien specialises in emo-pop of the baddest sort and Newton simply sucks. Big time. 'Chanson française' by Notre Dame is probably the first French chanson ever mentioned in this Kindamuzik section, and very funny too, for what it's worth. But let's skip to the good stuff. Like Rainbow Brothers with '818.323.01' or Jack Lahane with his chunky groove called 'Moure'. Nice examples of how to recycle eighties sounds and still sound fresh. Or the excellent militant hiphop of DSL, with 'Les Beats Qui Tapent Fort'. Top on my list is 'Voulez-Vous Danser?' by a guy called Thomas Winter. French music at its best. Winter sounds like Serge Gainsbourg who just got out of his grave, lit a Gauloise, found himself a backing band and took over a small stage in a smokey cafe. Interesting compilation, but nothing more than that.
