Unless you've been living under a rock for the past couple of years, you'll no doubt be aware that Berlin is home to a thriving and varied music scene, spurred on in part by low rents and laissez-faire politics in the former east. 'Hotel Stadt Berlin' collects the output from six labels that take part in this eclectic bonanza: electro-pop powerhouse Skanfrom (to give you an idea: One of their artists offers a charming reworking of Kylie Minogue's revolting 'Love You So'), dubglitch imprint City Centre Offices, the almighty Din (home of Pole, Arovane, and Monolake), Hey (Dubmusette. If that isn't a genre, it is now. And other zaniness.), Lux Nigra (hard to pin down), and Morr (flavour of the month for discerning hipsters). None of the tracks on this disc are essential must-haves, but then that doesn't seem to be the point, so let's just take 'Hotel Stadt Berlin' for what it is: an eclectic collection of charming material and a document of the opulent musical feast that is Berlin at the beginning of the 21st century.
