This compilation was first brought out as a lovingly designed, limited edition (3000 copies) triple-LP box set, with one side for each artist. It's been long out of print, but the kind folks at Drunken Fish Records have been so kind to provide us with a reissue on a double-CD, on which the original liner notes are sadly missing due to space constraints. Nonetheless, it's still very good: the first disc opens with a relentless massive drone by Bardo Pond - after fifteen minutes of feedback overdose driven by a pumping bass line, the final whispery seven minutes provide some well-needed relief. Then it's onward to a soundscape piece, Flying Saucer Attack's 'Since When' (Parts I-IV) - part I starts off very minimalistic, with a subdued heartbeat far off in the distance. After an almost orchestral interlude (part II) the throb returns accompanied by echos and loops, to further reverbarate with accompanying feedback in the fourth part. The disc ends with an untitled track by Jessamine, a lovely improvisational piece in which fractured guitar playing is slowly whipped into shape by the occasional drums, only to segue into electronic ambient territory in which the guitar makes its comeback later on. Disc 2 opens with Roy Montgomery's spirited reworking of a Sandy Bull instrumental, followed by four wildly different tracks by Loren Mazzacane Connors, alternating between outright drone, traditional, bluesy and ultimately scorching. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end with Charalambides elegiac and ethereal 'Naked In Our Deathskins'.
