Glasgow Underground has from its inception been suffering from the typical UK House disease: too many releases, too many DJ-tools and consequently way too few timeless records. And this already fifth compilation from the Scottish label has done little to try and convince us otherwise. True, we encountered some potent house and breaks on the first (unmixed) cd. Groove Assassins & DJ Raw, C Pen, Cinephile (with the seemingly Abba-influenced Wasted) and Rose Smith (with the aid of Ski Oakenfull) all provide decent to very good tracks. But, typically, only DJ Q's The Birth Of A Beautiful Thing, thanks to its majestic synth-washes and psychedelic keys is a topper, albeit no revelation either. Matters get worse on the second cd where label-boss Kevin McKay mixes up recent favourites. The cruel irony is that there are plenty of interesting tracks on this cd. DJ Q (still going strong), Mateo and Matos, Romanthony, Powder Productions (Dirt Bag is a very nice track indeed) and Teddy G (in an Omid remix) all will positively rock the dancefloor. There are even contributions we could label 'excellent' like the ones by Linus Loves and the inimitable Milton Jackson (with the scorching Daft Punk-meets-Paperclip People-style Dimensional). But all this is spoiled by McKay's clean and unimaginative, at times alarmingly disinterested mixing. Which is a bloody shame because this compilation contains a lot of good tracks. Adequate is one piece of terminology you're reluctant to use when it comes to music. But this is an adequate collection of house tracks.
