Nightlife is lifestyle. Within merely three years the belgian Moods crew have established a firm reputation as party organisers par excellence in the lowlands with their Eskimo parties in the old underwear plant in Ghent. Uniting a number of youth cultures ranging from hiphop / r&b to house, drum 'n bass, lounge, futurefunk & nu-jazz these events brighten up a party scene severely suffering from the one kindamuzik per night narrowmindedness. Eskimo usually choses for one common ingrediënt: musical integrity and dancefloor credibility. The recent Eskimo Tourism party for example featured Saint Germain, Idjut Boys, Recloose, Ed Rush, Dzihan & Kamien, Sven Van Hees, Koenie to name but a few famous ones playing live or spinning sets that night. And I missed it.
So what do they do for a poor KindaMuzik reviewer who was on a plane heading for sunny Greece the day of that party? They decide to bring out the Eskimo soundtrack compiling a bunch of musical gems of the 70's, 80's and 90's, have it mixed by Mo & Benoelie ending up with a timeless blend of disco, funk, jazz and house tunes. After a jazzy intro-tune this release kicks off with one of my all-time favorite kitsch anthems: the divine "I can't go for that (no can do)" by Hall and Oates and things can't go wrong anymore. The mood is set, the party has begun. De la soul continues on da recycle tip with the "Say no go" bonus beats, preparing the way for KC flight taking off to hiphopesque "Planet e" including the obligatory Talking Heads sample. Lettin' the days go by!
Taking it further on the dancefloor are the tracks by Mission Control ("outta limits", housy and very bristol), Instant House (what's in a name?), Doug Willis ("get your own" funk with sax, organlicks, female backings, the works) this mix smoothly glides into a most fascinating melting pot of music styles making it almost impossible to track which decade you're in. Who cares anyway? In their own words: "The future is present in the past. The past presents the future." I'm off to their dancefloor.
