With only the mighty Koop as a reference point we, not without suspicion, took in another nu-jazz compilation, this time put together by one DJ Wunderbaum for the Danish April label. And because an old law of human existence states that those who expect the least will receive the most, we lay back and did exactly that. And, what do you know; we were overwhelmed by the immense amount of sheer quality that was revealed. Swell Session opens proceedings with the fragile vocals and autumn tones of April in Vein. Koop donate the wonderful Tonight from their standout album Waltz For Koop. Free-flowing percussion, horns and a scatted vocal turn Odd Couple's Paperkites into a relaxed Sunday afternoon jazz thing. Ernesto's almost nine-minutes-long Hear My starts out with a crooning and swooning jazz diva that gradually steps aside to give way to bossa breaks and heavenly flutes. Top song that one. Then we have Jol's electrofunk-take on jazz, Gonky Boa, and Kahuun with the strange hypnotic folk rhythms and distorted sax of Striladans. Next up are Universal Funk with the funky bossa of Brothers And Sisters and A Bossa Electrica, who give us exactly what they promise with a steaming electric take on various exotica sounds. Tony Svensson Project brings out sunny bossa crooning and Butti49 continue on the percussive tip with the disco-influenced breaks fest Kolor Fokus. Brilliant Corner close off this supremely good compilation with the live drum and bass of Eternal. Long live the Fjordenfunk!
