If drum'n'bass is the most refreshing sound to have swept through the dance scene in the last ten years or so, then V recordings was and is one of the labels that provides a pulse for things happening. Now nearing its tenth year of existence, Bryan Gee and Jumping Jack Frost's label has always been pushing things forward. They were the ones who introduced the world to the Miracle of Funk that is Roni Size. And recently V introduced the Brazilians into drum'n'bass. Which, as you know, in turn led to Marky & Xrs' LK reaching the UK Top 20. Still, one cannot claim that there were any concessions made at any point in the label's history. All the tracks still breathe that bragging underground attitude and street brutality. Ghetto funk is hanging out with jazz and soulful electronics are the result on the first cd. On cd 2 the harder d'n'b aesthetics are on display. But that, too, ends in the summery Brazilian take of 'Sambassim' and 'LK'. Roni Size, Krust, Adam F, Optical, Ray Keith, Die, Lemon D, Dillinja, Digital and last but not least the South-American crew of Patife and Marky: the playlist is a triumph in itself. Essential if you want to find out what makes the combination of drum and bass the particular antidote against post-millennial dullness.
