Melodica and accordion versus new electronica on the most original compilation in quite a while.
CD, Mobile/Lowlands

Tekst: da volgaBabe

Publicatiedatum: 04 oktober 2002

This debut compilation of the German label Mobile wants to highlight the contributions the accordion and the melodica have made in recent electronic history. Let us hope this will not lead us to follow-ups like "Panflute Breaks" or "Drum'n'Triangle". But while those trends still go unnoticed, there's no denying that there is nothing but quality stuff on Asthmatic Worm, although the artists more than once go camping on the weirder ends of the electronic spectrum. The accordion track of all times is on it, of course: Herbert's Café De Flore remains, every nanosecond of it, one of electronic music's undying classics. Gotan Project, wholesalers when it comes to this kind of vintage instrumentation, contribute the dubby El Capitalismo Foráneo from their acclaimed album. Gonzalez gets all weird and decadent on the sampling front with an anecdotic romantic melodica ballad. Burnt Friedman cooks up a dubby melancholic affair with the aid of Can's Jaki Liebezeit. For your children's first steps into electronica Múm kindly donates a clicky lullaby with playground noises and a toy-like melodica, while Maerz's poppy clicked-out sounds come on like The Notwist playing in a tin box. Atom TM crosses Pole's creaky dub aesthetics with gypsy themes on Pole vs. Pentatonik Surprise. Sensorama's Where The Rabbit Sleeps is, to say the least, the most unconventional of the twelve: they start out in a campfire atmosphere, then bring in the glockenspiel for the centerpiece and willingly end in chaos with snivelling post-rock. Far out! Further highlights are by the male-female duo Hey with the Manu Chao-style Sans Toi, the dismal industrial echoes and mad interludes of Markus Nikolai's totally cut-up Would Grandpa Like It? (Love the title!) and last but not least Dntel with the elegiac folkloric click-hop of Your Hill. If someone would just tell me why it is called Asthmatic Worm.
