Desert Hearts introduce themselves in a swinging manner with DSR. Named after a lesbian flick, the young indie trio from Glasgow produce a mixture of Lou Barlow’s Sebadoh and the angular experimental rock of Mogwai, including the burst-outs, but never without the swinging hips. Let’s Get Worse has got that fresh "indie pop debut sound" that’s commonly typical of American college radio favourites such as Pavement and our one-time over-popular Bettie Serveert (whose debut even now is as great as back then). Desert Hearts have that same unrestrained, optimistic sound. That’ll probably be different with their second long-player, because more money means more slick production techniques, etc. But for now, this is it.
Although this ten-song record clocks in at just 35 minutes, the album contains lots of great transitions, well-thought-out noise fragments, and unbridled energy, lots of energy. It’s a funny thing that these youngsters have filled an album full of lofi rock that was shortly popular during the mid-Nineties, but never really got on to be something big. (At a recent gig by Electric Soft Parade, one of the band members asked if someone knew who Lou Barlow was before covering the man’s work. The crowd didn’t even blink!) As said, Let’s Get Worse lies between Sebadoh and Mogwai, but New Order lurk around every corner too. Peter Hook’s bass licks are a heavy influence on the bass player, who trades vocals on almost every song with the guitarist. And it’s this combination of indie guitars and New Order bass lines that make this lofi rock swing as well. Another great result of this is the light feel to all of the songs and the well-dosed guitar burst-outs. The catchy and melodic guitar and bass lines get whipped at the right time and for the right period of time. Restlessness, melody, and rapidly built-up and broken-down walls of noise: Let’s Get Worse is up there with Mogwai’s Young Team.
