Blasterpiece Theatre is the second LP from December Wolves, released about four years after their debut album Completely Dehumanized. I had only heard of the band before but never had the chance to listen to them; therefore, I was a bit unsure of what to expect. Luckily, the press page sent along with the CD gave the following description: "Progressive black metal utilizing eerie samples, electronic punctures and programmed tempos in the vein of Satyricon, Thorns, DHG and Solefald." Quite misleading, to say the least.
First off, comparing any band to Satyricon is a sin in itself. And if you choose to do this, the band had better come very close to living up to that kind of hype. And December Wolves falls extremely short of that mark. To find any particular thing about this album that is bad proves to be quite difficult, as they definitely have a unique sound, are quite skilled, and have good production to back it all up. It would seem that the problem with this band is that they simply don't have it. Living proof of my philosophy "great riffs don't necessarily make great songs."
For fear of sounding too negative about this album, it is important to point out that they do have a very original sound, and it is safe to say that Blasterpiece Theatre is pretty solid most of the way through. If you're looking for something new and different, check this out. It may not end up getting hundreds of spins in your CD player, but it is worth some listens and getting a glimpse of a new style of black metal. Beware, though . . . they have a "love them or hate them" sound, and it may not be worth what your local (over-priced) music store is selling it for. I might suggest looking for a few MP3s before taking a risk on the album.
